Nutrition 101: Vitamin B3

Hey there!  Happy Food Facts Friday!

We’re still plugging along with our Nutrition 101 series over here.  So far we’ve already covered:

Today we’ll be checking out some facts about Vitamin B3 aka Niacin.  Check it out!

Obviously, it’s a pretty cool vitamin!  You shouldn’t have difficulty obtaining enough niacin from the foods you eat, not to mention your body can actually make some of it’s own niacin out of riboflavin (vitamin B2).  However, if you do decide to supplement, as with the rest of the B-vitamins, I must suggest taking a B-complex to avoid getting your B-vitamin levels out of balance.  You should definitely be replacing your niacin stores daily, as any excess is flushed out of your body in your urine.  Check with your physician before you begin to take any supplements, especially if you have any preexisting conditions.

Although the vitamin won’t cause toxicity, overdoing it on the niacin can cause flushing, warmth and itching.

Well, that’s about it for today!  I hope you all have a wonderful weekend, and I’ll meet you back here tomorrow for some foodie action!
