Good morning! I hope you’re all feeling fabulous today!
On this lovely Green Tips Tuesday, I am going to tell you all about my new favorite toothpaste! I made the switch from Crest Pro-Health to Tom’s of Maine Whole Care a month or so ago, and I must say that I am really loving it!
I mentioned back in my first Natural Beauty post that I am making these little product changes in my life in order to put fewer chemicals in and on my body on a daily basis. I’m also motivated by trying to use companies who use greener practices than their mainstream alternatives.
Tom’s of Maine certainly fits those requirements!
Right on the back of the tube:
- No animal testing or animal ingredients.
- Sustainable practices are a priority.
- No artificial colors, flavors, fragrance, or preservatives.
- Strive to maximize recycled content and recyclability of our packaging.
- 5% of employee time spent volunteering, and 10% of their profits go to human and environmental “goodness”.
The company also lists every ingredient, it’s source, and it’s purpose, on their website! I thought this was genius. Looking at your toothpaste packaging, asking yourself, “WTF is carageenan??” Look on at tomsofmaine.com you’ll discover that it’s a thickener made from seaweed! Pretty cool set-up if you ask me!
Since Tom’s of Maine toothpaste is lacking some of the chemical ingredients of normal toothpaste, I was curious about how this would effect it’s cleaning power, so I took my question to a professional. When I went in for my semi-annual cleaning at the dentist a couple weeks ago, I asked my hygenist what she knew about, or thought of, this brand of toothpaste. She told me that it was perfectly safe and effective to use. Her only concerns were that it doesn’t have preservatives, so it gives her the creeps that it might become germy. (Personally, I’d rather just stay away from the preservatives anyway.) She was also under the impression that the toothpaste didn’t contain fluoride, which is an active ingredient for cavity prevention. However, after looking into it, I realized that Tom’s of Maine toothpaste DOES contain fluoride in the form of sodium monofluorophosphate. Win!
As for flavor, it’s definitely good! I have the spearmint flavor, but it also comes in peppermint, wintermint, and cinnamon clove. I definitely want to try peppermint next! The flavor isn’t as intense as normal toothpaste, but it also tastes more natural, since it IS natural. For some reason, I was expecting a natural toothpaste to have some funky aftertaste, but it definitely doesn’t. It leaves my mouth feeling fresh and clean! Exactly what you want from a toothpaste!
